BTS's "Arirang" Tops Billboard 200 for 2 Consecutive Weeks... First-Ever for K-pop
Longest-Running No. 1 Among BTS’s Seven Chart-Topping Albums
The group BTS has become the first K-pop act in history to top the main Billboard album chart for two consecutive weeks with their fifth studio album, "Arirang."
On April 5 (local time), Billboard announced in a chart preview article that BTS's new album held onto the top spot, surpassing hip-hop artist Kanye West's "BULLY" and Melanie Martinez's "HADES." This marks the first time a K-pop artist has ranked No. 1 on the "Billboard 200" for two consecutive weeks. Previously, the original soundtrack (OST) album for the animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" reached No. 1 for two non-consecutive weeks, but this is the first time a single artist has achieved the feat consecutively.
According to album sales tracking company Luminate, "Arirang" recorded 187,000 album units during this chart tracking period. Physical album sales, including CDs and other formats, reached 114,000 copies, allowing BTS to maintain the No. 1 position on the "Top Album Sales" chart for two consecutive weeks. The streaming equivalent albums (SEA) figure, which converts streaming plays into album sales, was 65,000 copies, while the track equivalent albums (TEA) figure, which converts digital song downloads into album sales, reached 8,000 copies.
"Arirang" is now the BTS album with the longest run at No. 1 among the group’s seven albums that have topped the Billboard 200. The previous six albums each spent one week at the top.
BTS’s success continues on the singles chart as well. The title track "Swim," which reached No. 1 on the main singles chart "Hot 100" last week, is expected to remain in the "Top 10" in the latest chart released on April 6. BTS achieved a "Double Dominance" last week by simultaneously topping both the album and singles charts, and they continue to set new records week after week.
