Localization of Core LNG Liquefaction Technology
Expansion Across the Value Chain

Samsung Heavy Industries has been recognized for its achievements on the global offshore technology stage with its independently developed liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction technology. The company aims to expand the application of this technology across the entire LNG value chain, leveraging its competitiveness in the FLNG (Floating LNG Production Facility) market.

On March 31 (local time), Samsung Heavy Industries announced that its natural gas liquefaction system, "SENSE LNG," received a Special Award at OTC ASIA 2026, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia.

OTC ASIA is an international offshore technology industry event held biennially since 2014, recognizing companies and individuals for outstanding technological innovation and contributions to the industry.

The natural gas liquefaction system is a core technology that cools LNG to minus 163 degrees Celsius, reducing its volume to about one six-hundredth, making storage and transportation possible. To date, only a few global companies, such as Royal Dutch Shell, ConocoPhillips, and Air Products, have led the development of this technology.

Since independently developing the "SENSE" liquefaction system in 2017, Samsung Heavy Industries has enhanced its performance and secured technological reliability through more than 1,000 hours of verification, laying the groundwork for entry into the global market.

The award-winning "SENSE LNG" features a gas expansion process that uses nitrogen and methane as single-component refrigerants, with the entire process operating in a gaseous state, thereby increasing stability and operational convenience. In addition, by combining a separation process that removes unnecessary components with the liquefaction process, the system simplifies facility configuration and improves energy efficiency.

Samsung Heavy Industries is currently constructing the Malaysia ZLNG and Canada Cedar FLNG projects, and is also pursuing additional orders, including the main contract for Mozambique Coral FLNG and a newbuild contract for the Delfin FLNG project in the United States.

Ahn Youngkyu, Head of the Technology Development Division at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, "We will further strengthen our competitiveness in the FLNG sector based on SENSE LNG," and added, "We will expand the application to small-scale onshore facilities such as LNG bunkering terminals, aiming to increase our market share in the global LNG value chain."
