Metropolitan Area Accounts for 82.7% of Revenue as Gyeonggi and Incheon Markets Expand
In 2025, the total ticket sales in South Korea's live performance market reached 1.7326 trillion won, marking an all-time high. Key indicators such as the number of performances, number of showings, and number of tickets sold all increased, indicating that the market is experiencing rapid growth.
On March 11, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts Management Service analyzed data from the Integrated Ticketing System for Performing Arts and reported that last year’s ticket sales increased by 18.8% compared to the previous year. The total number of performances grew by 9.6% to 23,608, and the number of showings rose by 11.3% to 136,579. The number of tickets booked also increased by 10.8% to 24.77 million.
The average ticket price also rose. Last year, the average ticket price was about 69,000 won, up approximately 5,000 won from the previous year.
The main driver of this market growth was the pop music sector, which saw a concentration of large-scale performances. Ticket sales for pop music performances reached 981.7 billion won, up 29% year-on-year. The simultaneous increase in both the number of large-scale concerts with more than 10,000 seats and the number of tickets booked is believed to be the main factor behind this growth.
The musical theater market also showed stable growth. Ticket sales for musicals reached 498.9 billion won, a 7.2% increase compared to the previous year. The number of performances, showings, and ticket bookings all increased, making musicals the most stable market segment among major genres.
The growth of the dance sector was also notable. Ticket sales for dance performances reached 26.7 billion won, a 29.5% increase compared to the previous year. The number of performances, showings, and ticket bookings all recorded double-digit growth rates. The active introduction of international contemporary dance repertoires to the Korean market is believed to have contributed to this expansion.
There are also signs of change in the structure of regional performance markets. Demand for performances remains concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, which accounted for 76.4% of all tickets booked and 82.7% of total ticket revenue nationwide.
However, within the Seoul metropolitan area, there has been a trend toward more dispersed consumption of performances. Seoul’s share of nationwide ticket sales fell from 65.1% in 2024 to 60.6% in 2025. In contrast, Gyeonggi Province’s share increased from 8.7% to 14.5%, and Incheon’s from 5.2% to 7.6%.
Outside the Seoul metropolitan area, Daegu and Busan were especially active in hosting performances. In terms of the number of performances, Daegu held 1,422 and Busan 1,381—the highest numbers. Ticket sales revenue was 101.7 billion won in Busan and 56.6 billion won in Daegu.
The government considers the regional expansion of the performance market a policy priority. While there has been a recent trend toward expanding performances from Seoul into Gyeonggi and Incheon, the majority of both supply and demand for performances is still concentrated in the metropolitan area.
