During this meeting, attention is focused on whether the council will discuss local issues and the primary election method for the integrated mayoral race in South Jeolla and Gwangju.
Previously, the Democratic Party of Korea’s Nomination Management Committee has been considering a plan to narrow down the candidates for the integrated special mayoral race in South Jeolla and Gwangju through regional preliminary elections.
The preliminary election will feature a total of eight candidates: four from the Gwangju region—Kang Gijeong, Min Hyeongbae, Lee Byeonghun, and Jeong Junho—and four from the South Jeolla region—Kim Yeongrok, Shin Jeonghun, Lee Gaeho, and Joo Cheolhyeon.
The Nomination Committee has proposed to the Supreme Council a plan to reduce the number of candidates to five through regional preliminary elections. Additionally, the introduction of a “citizen jury system” and “rotational voting” for the main election is under consideration.
The plan is to hold joint campaign speeches and debate sessions, as well as voting, by touring the three regions—Gwangju, eastern South Jeolla, and western South Jeolla—in order to broadly reflect the opinions of each area in line with the purpose of launching the integrated special city.
After the Supreme Council meeting, Jeong plans to visit Yeonggwang Terminal Market to observe the local livelihood scene and meet with citizens. Through the market visit, he intends to listen to the voices of local merchants and residents and assess the region’s economic situation.
In the afternoon, he will attend the “Yeonggwang County Energy Basic Income City Vision Proclamation Ceremony,” which will be held at the Grand Performance Hall of Yeonggwang Culture and Arts Center.
The energy basic income policy being promoted by Yeonggwang County is a regional circular basic income model that shares profits from renewable energy generation with local residents.
At the Yeonggwang County Vision Proclamation Ceremony, a mutually beneficial work agreement is also scheduled to be signed with the offshore wind power business council to promote a profit-sharing system. This aims to establish an institutional foundation for distributing profits from renewable energy projects to local residents.
