According to Damyang County on March 5, the county has operated a range of characters over the years—such as Daedori and Ddalli in the 2000s, Dami and Yangi in 2014, and Pandam in 2017. However, there have been continuous criticisms that these characters do not align with the rapidly changing global trends and the modern era.
Accordingly, the new character project is not limited to simple design production. Its core objective is to further strengthen Damyang’s tourism brand and expand it through a variety of commemorative merchandise and content.
In particular, storytelling has been highlighted as a key element in the character development. The county plans to reinterpret major tourism resources and the natural environment, such as Juknokwon and the Metasequoia Road, with a modern sensibility to introduce unique and relatable characters that will appeal to people of all ages.
From the planning stages, the county is actively pursuing trademark registration, and will produce a diverse array of commemorative merchandise and content utilizing the character to provide new attractions for tourists. Once development is complete, a preference survey will be conducted among residents and tourists to finalize the basic design of the character.
Additionally, the county is considering granting brand usage rights to the private sector, enabling the development of unique tourism products using the character, and is also reviewing the enactment of related ordinances to provide systematic support.
