Ministry of the Interior and Safety Establishes Dedicated Organization to Support Administrative Integration
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has established a dedicated organization to oversee the administrative integration efforts of regions such as Jeonnam-Gwangju, Chungnam-Daejeon, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk.
According to the government on March 4, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety formed the "Pan-Governmental Task Force for Local Administrative System Reform" this past January. The task force consists of approximately 40 government officials seconded from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and the Ministry of Education. It is divided into six teams, including those supporting the launch of the Chungnam-Daejeon and Jeonnam-Gwangju regions. To date, the task force has supported the passage of special legislation for administrative integration and the overall integration process. The team plans to continue its work until the integrated metropolitan cities, which are scheduled to be launched in July, can operate stably. A working-level team preparing for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk integration will be organized as soon as the relevant special law is passed and personnel are assigned.

The government is pursuing administrative integration with the goal of launching the integrated metropolitan cities of Jeonnam-Gwangju, Chungnam-Daejeon, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk in July 2026. These integrated metropolitan cities will be granted a status equivalent to Seoul Metropolitan City and will receive up to 5 trillion won in financial support annually for the next four years, totaling 20 trillion won. The government believes that, given the practical timeline, the administrative integration law must be passed by early this month. However, in the National Assembly plenary session held on March 1, only the special law for Jeonnam-Gwangju administrative integration was approved; the special laws for Chungnam-Daejeon and Daegu-Gyeongbuk are still awaiting passage this month.
