"30-year Goal Achieved"...Green Light for Integrated Mokpo National and Sunchon National Medical School with 100-student Quota
Jeollanam-do-Style Public Healthcare Talent Training Accelerates on the Basis of an "Integrated Medical School"
Tailored Education Reflecting the Characteristics of Island and Rural Communities
Mokpo National University, a national university, welcomed the government's decision to allocate 100 medical school admissions slots by 2030 and expressed a strong commitment to resolving the chronic shortage of medical personnel in the Jeollanam-do region.
According to Mokpo National University on the 11th, the finalization of the new medical school quota is viewed as a major turning point in resolving the structural medical imbalance in the southwestern part of Jeollanam-do and its island, rural, and fishing communities, which have long suffered from medical under-service as the only region in the country without a national medical school.
Until now, the emergency and essential medical care system in the islands and rural areas of Jeollanam-do has faced limitations due to staff shortages and insufficient medical infrastructure. The university emphasized that the confirmation of a 100-student quota is highly meaningful in that it has institutionally realized the establishment of a regional healthcare system based on national responsibility.
On the basis of this confirmed quota, Mokpo National University will move in earnest to establish a "Jeollanam-do-style public healthcare talent training system," premised on a university integration with Sunchon National University.
The plan is to gradually build a balanced system for medical education, research, and training that encompasses both the southwestern and eastern parts of the region by organically combining the two universities' strengths in education and research with their local foundations.
In particular, under the integrated university system, they will focus on: cultivating medical personnel who can provide comprehensive care within the region; operating curricula centered on essential and public healthcare; strengthening clinical and training bases in cooperation with local medical institutions; and developing tailored medical education models that reflect the characteristics of island, rural, and aging areas.
Through these efforts, the university aims to establish a sustainable virtuous cycle structure for training medical professionals who are educated, trained, and settle down in the region.
In addition, Mokpo National University plans to work closely with Jeollanam-do Province, relevant local governments, and local medical institutions to systematically build the institutional and physical foundations needed to establish and operate the integrated medical school and a national university hospital.
