Waste Heat No Longer Wasted... Doosan Fuel Cell Develops New Energy Business Model
Building an energy convergence system in cooperation with LG Electronics
Maximizing energy efficiency through simultaneous use of electricity and heat
Promoting a new business model utilizing waste heat from hydrogen fuel cells
Doosan Fuel Cell is launching the development of a new energy business model that utilizes not only the electricity generated by hydrogen fuel cells but also the waste heat that used to be discarded. By joining hands with LG Electronics, Doosan Fuel Cell plans to build an energy convergence system that combines hydrogen fuel cells with air conditioning and cooling technologies, thereby simultaneously pursuing carbon neutrality and the expansion of the distributed power market.
Doosan Fuel Cell announced on the 10th that on the 9th it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LG Electronics at LG Science Park in Magok-dong, Seoul, to promote a "project to maximize energy efficiency by utilizing clean heat sources for carbon neutrality."
Under this agreement, Doosan Fuel Cell will be responsible for supplying the main hydrogen fuel cell equipment capable of producing electricity and heat simultaneously, as well as for system optimization. LG Electronics will take charge of building the energy convergence system by utilizing heat pumps, absorption chillers, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems linked with hydrogen fuel cells. The two companies plan to continue cooperation across the entire project, including technology development, policy response, and business development.
Although hydrogen fuel cells generate heat during the electricity production process, its utilization has so far been limited. The core of this business model is to actively use this waste heat by combining it with LG Electronics' air conditioning and cooling technologies. The heat generated from hydrogen fuel cells can be used for heating and hot water supply, and through heat pumps and absorption chillers it can also be converted for cooling and refrigeration, significantly improving energy utilization efficiency.
The two companies plan to expand the supply of this business model, focusing on facilities such as industrial complexes, data centers, and large commercial buildings where there is simultaneous demand for electricity and heating/cooling. Since this system can be relatively easily installed even in areas where it is difficult to expand transmission and distribution networks, it is expected to have high utility as a distributed power source that enables eco-friendly and stable energy supply.
