Gwangju Dong-gu Selected as Outstanding Institution for Regional Statistics Best Practices
Customized Dementia-Safe Villages
Analyzed by Population Statistics and Completed with an Index
Gwangju Dong-gu District announced on December 16 that it was selected as an outstanding institution in the national finals of the "2025 Regional Statistics Best Practices Contest," organized by the National Data Agency, for its case study titled "A Customized Dementia-Safe Village Analyzed by Population Statistics and Completed with an Index."
Dong-gu District received high marks for developing an independent "Dementia Vulnerability Index" by combining population statistics with dementia-related data, and for establishing a scientific and customized dementia management system based on this index. Its dementia-safe village management policy, grounded in statistical data, has been recognized nationwide for its excellence.
Dong-gu District, where 23.6% of the population is aged 65 or older and the estimated dementia prevalence rate is 9.45%, has long recognized the need for customized policies that reflect the local population structure and dementia risk factors, given its status as a "super-aged and dementia-vulnerable city."
Accordingly, the district calculated a "Dementia Vulnerability Index" that quantifies the dementia risk level for each area using population statistics, and designated priority dementia management areas as "Dementia-Safe Villages" based on this index. By providing customized dementia management services tailored to the characteristics of each village, Dong-gu District is improving the quality of life for dementia patients and their families, while also strengthening the community protection system.
