Daejang Hongdae Line Breaks Ground on the 15th... Gangseo Mayor Jin Kyohun: "A Leap Toward Becoming the Key Transportation Hub of Western Seoul Metropolitan Area"
Opening in 2031... Improving Transportation in the Southwestern Region
"Continued Efforts to Resolve Remaining Transportation Issues, Including the Gangbuk Transversal Line"
The Daejang Hongdae Line, a project that has been a top priority for Gangseo District in Seoul (District Mayor Jin Kyohun) for the past 10 years, will officially break ground on December 15. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. that day at the artificial turf field in Ojeong Grand Park, Bucheon.
The Daejang Hongdae Line is a metropolitan railway stretching a total of 20 kilometers from Daejang District in Bucheon, passing through Hwagok, the vicinity of the Gangseo District Office, and Gayang, before reaching Hongdae Entrance. The project is a private investment initiative with a total budget of 2.1 trillion won, and aims to open in 2031.
This groundbreaking is considered a significant turning point that will address the transportation imbalance in Gangseo District and the western region of Seoul. Residents in areas such as Deungchon-dong and Hwagok-dong have long faced inconvenience due to poor access to urban rail, which has also been cited as a factor hindering balanced regional development.
Once the Daejang Hongdae Line opens, travel time from Daejang District to Hongdae Entrance will be reduced from the current 50 minutes to approximately 27 minutes, nearly halving the journey. Residents of Gangseo District will also be able to reach Hongdae Entrance from Hwagok Station in just over 10 minutes, greatly improving access to the city center.
With transfer connections to four major lines-Wonjong Station (Seohae Line), Hwagok Station (Line 5), Gayang Station (Line 9), and Hongdae Entrance Station (Line 2, Airport Railroad, and Gyeongui-Jungang Line)-overall transportation convenience in the southwestern region is expected to improve. Areas previously considered transportation blind spots, such as Gogang and Wonjong-dong in Bucheon, Sinwol-dong in Yangcheon, and Hwagok-dong in Gangseo, will see expanded rail access, leading to anticipated improvements in residents' quality of life.
The creation of new station areas is expected to stimulate local commercial activity and increase residential property values, while enhanced connectivity to Magok District and the Gimpo Airport Innovation District is also expected to expand industrial and economic zones.
The district believes that the groundbreaking of the Daejang Hongdae Line will also bolster efforts to relaunch another long-awaited project, the Gangbuk Transversal Line. This line would span 25.7 kilometers from Cheongnyangni to Mok-dong, with three planned stations, including Deungchon Station, within Gangseo District. After failing the preliminary feasibility study last year, the district has continued its efforts to relaunch the project, including submitting a petition with 120,000 resident signatures to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
