The number of people with a migration background-defined as individuals who themselves or whose parents have at least one parent with a migration background-increased by 134,000 last year. This group now accounts for 5.2% of the total population. The rise is attributed to an increase in foreign workers, international students, and marriage migrants, as well as the formation of families as these individuals have children.
