President Lee: "Mediation and Coordination Preferable to Taking Sides in China-Japan Relations"
'One Year Since Martial Law'
Press Conference with Foreign Correspondents
President Lee Jaemyung stated regarding the conflict between China and Japan, "If we take sides, it will only serve to escalate tensions."
On December 3, at a press conference for foreign correspondents held at the Blue House State Guest House to mark the first anniversary of the 12·3 Martial Law incident, President Lee remarked, "There is a Korean proverb that says, 'Stop fights, but encourage negotiation.'"
President Lee further emphasized, "Whether in personal relationships or between nations, it is always best to pursue coexistence, mutual respect, and cooperation to the greatest extent possible. We should strive to find common ground and seek out as many opportunities for cooperation as possible."
He added that he would seek a path where everyone can coexist. President Lee said, "Rather than taking sides, I will look for ways for everyone to coexist. If there are areas where it is possible, it is desirable to minimize conflict, mediate, and play a coordinating role where appropriate."
