Yangyang County Launches Full-Scale 'Snow Removal Measures' for Heavy Snowfall This Winter... Emergency System Begins in November
Significant Expansion of Snow Removal Equipment and Materials
Full-Scale Efforts for Prompt and Systematic Snow Removal Response
Yangyang County in Gangwon Province has designated the period from November this year to mid-March next year as the snow removal response period to prevent traffic disruptions and isolation caused by heavy snowfall this winter and to minimize inconvenience for residents. The county will actively carry out prompt and systematic snow removal operations during this time.
The county has established a 24-hour snow removal system by securing its own equipment, including two multipurpose snow removal vehicles (Unimog), one excavator, and four 15-ton snow blowers, as well as leased equipment such as three Unimogs, four 15-ton dump trucks, and one 5-ton dump truck. Additionally, at the township and village level, 11 snow removal vehicles and around 180 tractors will be deployed to quickly clear snow from village roads.
To ensure smooth snow removal, the county has pre-secured snow removal materials, including 691 tons of road salt, 137 tons of calcium chloride, 111 tons of eco-friendly de-icing agents, and 12 tons of liquid de-icers. In particular, two tons of calcium chloride have been distributed to each township and village to prepare for emergencies.
The county has completed on-site inspections and the placement of snow removal materials at nine locations vulnerable to snow and ice. Among these, an automatic brine spraying system has been installed on the access road to Naksan Nursing Home, enabling even faster response during heavy snowfall.
The nine locations vulnerable to icing are: 391-7 Geoma-ri in Yangyang-eup, 320 Gangseon-ri in Ganghyeon-myeon, San 12-3 Songjeon-ri in Sonyang-myeon, 838-7 Gangseon-ri in Ganghyeon-myeon, Buso-chiri mountain pass in Sonyang-myeon, the access road to Naksan Nursing Home in Ganghyeon-myeon, Sangwolcheon-ri mountain pass in Hyeonnam-myeon, Habok-ri (Jangjaeteo) mountain pass in Ganghyeon-myeon, and Suyeo-ri mountain pass in Sonyang-myeon.
On November 18, the county, together with Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, inspected the comprehensive snow removal warehouse, forward snow removal bases, structures vulnerable to snow accumulation, and areas likely to be isolated. On November 26, the county held an internal meeting to select snow removal sections and prepare for heavy snowfall. On December 16, a full inspection of all snow removal vehicles is scheduled to further strengthen preparedness for winter snowstorms.
In addition, the county has signed an agreement with local construction companies to deploy large-scale equipment, including 48 excavators and 24 dump trucks, to clear all urban roads (52 km of planned city roads) in Yangyang-eup in the event of prolonged heavy snowfall, aiming to resolve traffic disruptions as quickly as possible.
