Japanese patent gazettes will be translated into Korean and made available to the public.

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on November 24 that, starting from November 27, Japanese patent gazette data can be accessed through the patent information open platform, KIPRIS Plus.

The data to be provided consists of a total of 17.57 million Korean translations of Japanese patent gazettes published by the Japan Patent Office from 1973 to September of last year.

The Korean translations can be searched and viewed on KIPRIS Plus. With this, companies and research institutes will be able to conduct prior art searches, value assessments, and research and development (R&D) analyses on Japanese patents without the need for additional translation.

KIPO expects that, by providing application services using intellectual property data, new services will become possible, such as companies analyzing Japanese patent information using the Korean translations.

The Japanese-Korean translation engine used to build the translations was trained on patent gazettes jointly filed in Korea and Japan using artificial intelligence (AI), enabling it to accurately process the unique sentence structures of patent documents and specialized terminology by technical field.

KIPO previously released translations of European gazettes (5 million cases) in 2022, U.S. gazettes (14.8 million cases) in 2023, and Chinese gazettes (39 million cases) last year. This year, it has added translations of Japanese patent gazette data.

Among the five leading intellectual property offices (Korea, United States, Europe, China, and Japan), the cumulative number of Korean translations of patent gazettes released now totals 76.37 million. Adding the 5.66 million domestic gazettes currently serviced by KIPO (as of the end of last month), the total number of IP5 patent gazettes increases to 82.03 million.

Jung Jaehwan, Director General of the Intellectual Property Information Bureau at KIPO, stated, "We will continue to expand and enhance the quality of overseas patent translation data to support all citizens in becoming leaders of technological innovation."
