"From Landmark to Headache": Suyeongman Yacht Stadium Undergoes First Full Redevelopment in 40 Years... Busan Breaks Ground Today
State-of-the-Art Mooring Facilities, Yacht Exhibition Hall, and Complex Cultural and Commercial Spaces
Creation of Marine Cultural and Waterfront Spaces, with Completion Targeted for Late 2027
The Suyeongman Yacht Stadium, once both a landmark and a headache for Haeundae, is about to undergo a major transformation as groundbreaking begins.
On the morning of November 24, the city of Busan held a groundbreaking ceremony for the "Suyeongman Yacht Stadium Redevelopment Private Investment Project" at the Suyeongman Yacht Stadium, announcing the start of a full-scale redevelopment for the first time in 40 years.
Originally built as the yacht venue for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the Suyeongman Yacht Stadium is now seen as a turning point for Busan's marine leisure industry. The ceremony included a national pledge, introduction of guests, a project introduction video, commemorative speeches, congratulatory remarks, and a celebratory event, with over 200 attendees including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, City Council Chairperson Ahn Sungmin, and National Assemblyman Joo Jinwoo.
This redevelopment is a long-term project that has overcome numerous challenges, including administrative procedures and legal issues, since the private investment proposal in 2008. The city explained that it has continuously negotiated with the project operator to normalize the project, and with this groundbreaking, the redevelopment is now on track.
The total project cost is 158.4 billion won (based on 2008 constant prices). The project operator, Ipark Marina Co., Ltd., will build state-of-the-art mooring facilities for a total of 567 vessels (both on land and at sea), a yacht exhibition hall, a yacht club house, a complex cultural and commercial facility, and waterfront spaces for citizens.
The city aims to complete the project by the end of 2027. Once redevelopment is finished, a world-class marina facility and a marine cultural complex space for both citizens and tourists will be created, expected to revitalize the local economy and generate new jobs. Busan's competitiveness in attracting international yacht competitions and its marine leisure infrastructure are also expected to be further strengthened.
