Citizen Festival to Promote Wood Culture Expansion
Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Yuk Donghan) is making steady progress toward the end-of-year completion of a wood experience center, a wood-themed street, and other facilities in the area around Yaksacheon Culture Park.
In 2022, the city was selected for the Korea Forest Service’s Wood-Friendly City Development Project. This project involves constructing wooden structures using domestic wood throughout the Yaksacheon Culture Park area. By the end of this year, major facilities such as the woodcraft experience center and the wood welcome center are scheduled for completion within the park. The total project budget is 5 billion won, including 2.5 billion won in national funding.
The city has set the end of the year as the target completion date and is currently focused on final construction work. In and around Yaksacheon Culture Park, within a 1-kilometer radius, wooden structures, a woodcraft experience center, and community spaces are being established. Notably, the watchtower that once stood atop the hill in Yaksadong, which holds historical significance and local memories, will be restored in miniature form.
In connection with this, a citizen participation festival has been organized to introduce Chuncheon’s Wood-Friendly City Development Project and raise awareness among residents about the importance of using domestic wood.
The city has designated the period from the 10th to the 28th as "Wood Week," during which it will host wood workshop tours, woodcraft experience programs, and a contest for wooden lifestyle accessories. The main event, "Chuncheon Wood Festa," will take place from the 15th to the 16th in the Hwadong 2571 area, featuring △DIY wooden accessory workshops △a wood camping zone △woodworking demonstrations by master craftspeople △promotional exhibitions and a flea market for local woodcraft workshops and companies. A variety of hands-on programs will also be available for families with children, allowing them to touch and experience wood firsthand.
During "Wood Class Week" from the 19th to the 23rd, various programs will be held across the region, including △wine, cheese & wood pairing classes △woodcraft entrepreneurship and startup seminars △wood workshop tours △wood tea experience programs. On the 29th and 30th, as a follow-up event, there will be a puppet show using wooden dolls, a giant Christmas tree photo zone, and a radio studio bus, offering citizens a wide range of attractions and activities.
