Uncomfortable Seoul Traffic to Be Changed by Citizens... Police Launch 'Traffic Re-Design' Project
The police are launching a project to completely overhaul Seoul's traffic system by directly reflecting citizen feedback.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 3rd that it will implement the "Seoul Traffic Re-Design" project, which aims to comprehensively improve the traffic environment and culture by directly collecting opinions from citizens.
From November 10 to December 31, over a period of about two months, any citizen can submit suggestions or ideas for improving aspects of the traffic environment and culture in Seoul that they find dangerous or inconvenient. Submissions can be made through the websites of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee, or by using QR codes posted at various high-traffic locations.
Based on the collected feedback, the police will conduct joint on-site inspections and categorize the issues as follows: inconvenient or unreasonable locations, areas where traffic congestion occurs, places prone to traffic accidents and other dangerous spots, and areas with frequent traffic law violations such as reckless driving. They plan to develop improvement measures for each category.
Issues that can be addressed in the short term will be implemented immediately. For matters requiring institutional or comprehensive improvements, or those that need construction or budget allocation, the police will collaborate with relevant agencies and pursue phased implementation by June 2026.
In addition, starting on the 4th, the police announced that they will conduct traffic enforcement targeting violations such as blocking intersections and illegal lane changes during rush hour, as part of efforts to gain public support. Each police station has selected four priority zones for enforcement, focusing on intersections with frequent violations, areas with high pedestrian density, access points to exclusive roads, and school zones.
Whereas previously traffic police were deployed across various locations, this time the approach will shift to concentrating deployments for three consecutive days at three to four frontline police stations. The traffic motorcycle "Rapid Response Teams" will be newly organized into four regions to establish an immediate response system in the event of major unexpected incidents or congestion.
