In Bukchuncheon, both the first frost and first ice were also observed 9 days earlier than last year. In Bukgangneung, the first frost was observed 22 days earlier, and the first ice 30 days earlier, compared to the previous year.
This cold snap was caused by cold air, reaching as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius at an altitude of 5 kilometers, being pushed into Korea following the counterclockwise flow of a low-pressure system circulating over the northern continent.
Chilly weather, colder than the seasonal average, is expected to continue until tomorrow morning. However, as the cold air in the upper atmosphere retreats from midday, the cold will gradually ease.
