Daejeon Uam Historic Park to Be Transformed with Light
Promotion of Cultural Heritage LED Landscape Lighting Project
500 Million Won Invested, to Be Unveiled Early Next Year
Daejeon City is investing 500 million won to implement an LED landscape lighting project throughout the entire Daejeon Uam Historic Park, transforming the park with light.
Daejeon Uam Historic Park, established to honor Song Siyeol, a prominent Confucian scholar of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, covers an area of approximately 53,000 square meters.
Through this project, the city aims to further enhance the architectural beauty and dignity of Daejeon-designated cultural heritage sites within the park, such as Namganjeongsa, Gigukjeong, and Songjadaejeon. At the same time, the project will strengthen the safety and convenience of citizens using the park at night.
Since the entire park is designated as a cultural heritage protection zone, this project involved extensive expert consultation and multiple preliminary procedures, unlike ordinary landscape lighting projects. The city meticulously reviewed factors such as the heat emission, color temperature, and brightness of the lighting fixtures, which could affect the wooden structures. The construction design was also carefully planned to prevent damage to any underground relics.
The main theme of the project is to create a narrative of Song Siyeol's life and scholarship along the park’s walking trail, which starts at Namganjeongsa and continues through Jangpangak, the Relics Hall, Ijikdang, and Deokporu. The lighting design also incorporates refined elements to highlight the aesthetics of traditional landscapes.
In particular, the pond at Namganjeongsa and the lotus pond in front of Deokporu have been designated as landscape highlights. The project will use subtle aquatic lighting effects that cast a gentle glow over the water, creating a mysterious yet elegant nighttime view unique to Uam Historic Park.
This project was initiated based on the proposal of Daejeon City Council member Jeong Myungkuk (People Power Party, Dong-gu), who sought to develop Uam Historic Park in Dong-gu, Daejeon, into a leading tourism infrastructure for the city. Building on the success of this project, the city plans to gradually expand landscape lighting projects for cultural heritage sites throughout the urban area.
An Junho, head of the Heritage Management Team, stated, "Through this landscape lighting project, which promotes the charm of cultural heritage in citizens’ daily lives and ensures both the preservation of heritage and the safety of citizens, we will continue to elevate the prestige of Daejeon as a world-class city."
