Gangneung City Strengthens Crackdown on Illegal Buildings and Urges Compliance with Building Act
Gangneung City in Gangwon Province has urged residents to comply with the Building Act to prevent any disadvantages in exercising property rights due to illegal buildings.
The city conducts regular and occasional inspections of illegal buildings to foster a pleasant and safe architectural culture.
New construction, expansion, change of use, major repairs, and unauthorized installation of temporary structures without completing prior administrative procedures are considered violations of the Building Act and are subject to inspection as illegal buildings.
When an illegal building is detected, a correction order is first issued for the violation. The building is then marked as an illegal structure in the building register, which restricts various permits, licenses, and business registrations.
If the violation is not corrected even after the correction order, a compliance fine will be imposed until the violation is rectified. In particular, if the violation is for commercial purposes (with a violation area exceeding 50 square meters) or is habitual, the compliance fine will be increased.
