Jarasum Island in Gapyeong Designated as "Local Garden" Six Years After Semiwon
On October 15, Gyeonggi Province registered Jarasum Island in Gapyeong County as the "Gyeonggi-do Local Garden." This marks the second designation following "Semiwon" in Yangpyeong County in 2019.
A local garden is a public garden established and operated by a local government, reflecting the region's natural environment and cultural characteristics. Serving as a key foundation for the spread of garden culture and regional revitalization, there are 15 such gardens nationwide, including Semiwon, the first local garden in Korea.
Jarasum Island, set against the backdrop of the Bukhan River, harmoniously combines diverse plant resources and ecological spaces. It is renowned both domestically and internationally as the venue for the annual "Jarasum Jazz Festival," serving as a multi-cultural space where leisure, culture, and tourism are integrated within nature.
Gyeonggi Province plans to expand the foundation of garden culture that highlights regional characteristics by focusing on local gardens in each area. The province will also enhance infrastructure for community gardens, private gardens, and daily-life gardens so that residents can experience the value of gardens in their everyday lives.

We will continue to establish and register local gardens in each region that embody local natural resources and daily life culture, and strengthen administrative support so that these gardens can serve as balanced hubs for the development of garden culture and industry."
