Gwangju's First Policy Forum: Sharing Cases of Rights Protection
Assessing Regional Human Rights Governance and Protection Systems
The Gwangju Human Rights Office of the National Human Rights Commission will hold a policy forum at 3:00 p.m. on October 15 at Citizen Maru in Jeonil Building 245, Gwangju, to reflect on the achievements and limitations of its 20 years since establishment. This forum will serve as an opportunity to identify tasks for strengthening the regional human rights protection system in the future.
This event, co-hosted by the Gwangju Human Rights Office and the Gwangju Human Rights Advocacy Organization Council, is the first policy forum of its kind to be held in the Gwangju area. The council was formed in June, with the participation of seven rights protection organizations, including the Gwangju Human Rights Office, as well as organizations for children, labor, the elderly, people with disabilities, and ombudsmen. Each organization will share their experiences and concerns from the field.
The forum will be chaired by Kim Kigon, Deputy Director of the Gwangju Development Institute, and will be conducted in three sessions. In the first session, Park Jinwoo, Head of the Investigation Team at the Gwangju Human Rights Office, will give a presentation on "Exploring the Roles and Challenges of Regional Rights Protection Organizations." Presentations will also be given by Jeon Jinhui, Standing Human Rights Ombudsman of Gwangju City; Park Chandong, Director of the Gwangju Center for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Kim Seokhwan, Team Leader at the Gwangju Elderly Protection Agency; Kim Hyeeun, Deputy Director of the Bitgoeul Child Protection Agency; and Jeong Chanho, Director of the Gwangju Labor Rights Center.
The second session will address "The Achievements and Challenges in Establishing Regional Human Rights Governance." Ko Aesoon, Head of the Cooperation Team at the Gwangju Human Rights Office, will deliver the main presentation. Panelists will include Choi Wanuk, Standing Activist at Gwangju Inkwon Jigi Hwalchak; Hari, Researcher at the Human Rights Education Research Institute Ttubukyi; and Park Kohyungjun, Standing Activist at the Citizens' Coalition for a Society Without Academic Cliques. This will be followed by a general discussion.

The third session, titled "Gwangju-in Communication Forum," will bring together current and former staff, regional human rights officers, and human rights advocates.
