Recipient of One of the Most Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards
Actor Jung-jae Lee has become the first Korean to be inducted into the Chaplin Awards Hall of Fame.
On October 3, Jung-jae Lee was honored as the recipient of the Asia category at the Charlie Chaplin Award ceremony held in Singapore. This award is the most prestigious lifetime achievement honor in the film industry, presented by Film at Lincoln Center in New York.
Since the establishment of the Asia category in 2018, the award's prestige has grown as it has been presented to prominent figures in the Chinese-language film industry, including actor Tony Leung, legendary director Zhang Yimou, and Brigitte Lin. Jung-jae Lee is the first Korean to receive this honor in the Asia category.
According to the organizers, Jung-jae Lee was recognized for his sustained and positive impact on Asian cinema through works that resonate with audiences worldwide.
Jung-jae Lee said, "Receiving this award in the name of the esteemed filmmaker and artist Charlie Chaplin makes me even more nervous and humbled by the weight of this honor," adding, "As an Asian filmmaker, I will strive to have a positive influence."
Previously, after the "Squid Game" series, Jung-jae Lee made history in 2022 by becoming the first Asian actor to win the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series with Season 1. Building on this achievement, he also became the first Korean actor to appear in the Star Wars series.
In "Squid Game," Jung-jae Lee played Seong Gi-hun, a character who, after losing everything to gambling, enters a deadly survival game. As the series progresses, Gi-hun becomes a character who resists the system through various trials and tribulations.
This year, Jung-jae Lee completed filming for the Netflix "Squid Game" series. On November 3 at 8:50 p.m., he is set to return in the tvN Monday-Tuesday drama "Annoying Love." "Annoying Love" is a drama about a national actor who has lost his way and an entertainment reporter obsessed with justice, featuring battles of wit, fact bombs, and breaking down prejudices.
