Gwangju City: "The Hyundai Gwangju Mixed-Use Mall Proceeding as Planned"
Unrelated to the Residential-Commercial Complex Development
Hyundai Department Store Group to Begin Construction as Originally Planned
On October 1, Gwangju City announced that the construction of the mega-sized mixed-use shopping mall, The Hyundai Gwangju, is proceeding as planned, independently of the residential-commercial complex development on the former Jeonbang and Ilshin Textile sites.
Recently, following news that some construction companies have abandoned the residential-commercial complex development project, citizens have expressed concerns that the construction of The Hyundai Gwangju on the same site might also face setbacks. However, the city explained that the mixed-use shopping mall is a project independently pursued by Hyundai Department Store Group and is not directly related to the residential-commercial complex development.
In July, the city and Hyundai Department Store Group held a groundbreaking report event for The Hyundai Gwangju and officially announced that construction is scheduled to begin at the end of October this year. Currently, Hyundai Department Store Group is in the process of selecting a contractor for The Hyundai Gwangju, and preparations for groundbreaking will begin as soon as the contractor is chosen.
The Hyundai Gwangju is a mega-sized mixed-use shopping mall with a total floor area of 272,955 square meters (82,569 pyeong), a business area of 100,890 square meters (30,000 pyeong), six basement levels and eight above-ground floors, and a total of 2,652 parking spaces. It will be the first large-scale private mixed-use cultural and commercial facility in downtown Gwangju, and is expected to significantly contribute to revitalizing the local commercial district and increasing the urban population.
To ensure smooth progress, the city formed a New Vitality Administrative Council, including the relevant departments and local district offices, and carried out administrative procedures based on the three principles of speed, transparency, and fairness. Procedures such as traffic impact assessment and landscape and architectural reviews, which typically take 19 months, were completed in just 11 months, allowing the construction schedule to be advanced.
