Academic Conference Marking the 80th Anniversary of Liberation and the 60th Anniversary of Korea-Japan Relations
"Zainichi Koreans: Exploring History and Future"
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation and the 60th anniversary of Korea-Japan diplomatic relations, an academic conference will be held to explore the historical trajectory and future of Zainichi Koreans.

View original imageThe National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the Korea-Japan Society for Ethnic Issues, the Research Association for the History of the Zainichi Korean Movement, and the History and Culture Archive Research Center of the Institute for Humanities at Kyungpook National University announced that they will jointly host the "International Academic Conference - Zainichi Koreans: Exploring History and Future" at 1:00 p.m. on September 20 in the 6th floor conference room of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.
Supported by the National Institute of Korean History and Kyungpook National University, the conference will feature a total of seven presentations, followed by topic-specific discussions and a general discussion session.
The conference will begin with a presentation by Professor Kim Kyungnam (Kyungpook National University) on "Korea-Japan Relations and the Status of Zainichi Koreans," with a discussion led by Professor Park Mia (Sogang University). This will be followed by a presentation from Professor Emeritus Kim Kwangyeol (Kwangwoon University) on "Formation of Koreans in Japan Before 1945 and Suggestions for the Study of Social Movements," with Senior Researcher Kim Jinwoong (Future Value of East Asia Research Institute, Sungkyunkwan University) leading the discussion.
Professor Tanaka Masataka (Senshu University, Japan) will present on "The 1923 Kanto Earthquake Massacre of Koreans and the Response of Koreans Living in Japan," with Professor Sung Juhyun (Institute for Korea-China Relations, Dankook University) as the discussant. For the topic "The Founding Congress of the League of Koreans in Japan During the Liberation Period," Professor Kim Induk (Cheongam College) will present, followed by a discussion led by Professor Emeritus Choi Youngho (Youngsan University).
On the subject of "The 1965 Korea-Japan Treaty and the Legal Status of Zainichi Koreans: Future Prospects," Professor Yoshizawa Fumitoshi (Niigata University of International and Information Studies) will give a presentation, with Professor Kim Hyunsoo (Meiji University) leading the discussion. The topic "Homeland Unification Among Zainichi Koreans Affiliated with Mindan" will be addressed by Researcher Jo Kieun (Institute of Overseas Affairs, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies), with Professor Nam Kijeong (Institute for Japanese Studies, Seoul National University) as the discussant.
The final topic, "Advocacy Movements for Zainichi Koreans' Living Rights After Liberation Through the 1950s," will be presented by Professor Kim Kyungho (Keiwa College), with Professor Choi Sunghui (Osaka Institute of Technology) leading the discussion. After the presentations, Professor Kim Minyoung (Kunsan National University) will serve as moderator for the general discussion session.
Professor Kim Kyungnam, who organized the conference, stated, "This is a meaningful occasion to discuss both the history and future of Zainichi Koreans on the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 60th anniversary of Korea-Japan diplomatic relations," adding, "It will serve not only as a venue for academic exchange between Korea and Japan, but also as an open forum for public discourse involving citizens."
