Hanwha Ocean Secures First Major Contract with Yang Ming Marine Transport: Wins Order for Seven Eco-Friendly Container Ships Worth 1.9 Trillion Won
Designed for LNG and Ammonia Dual-Fuel Compatibility
World’s First High-Pressure Type-B Fuel Tank Applied
Hanwha Ocean (President and CEO Kim Heecheol) has further strengthened its position in the Taiwanese market by securing a large-scale order for eco-friendly vessels from a leading Taiwanese shipping company.
On September 17, Hanwha Ocean announced that it had received an order from Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., one of the world’s top 10 shipping companies, for seven 15,880 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The total contract value is 1.9336 trillion won.

The newly ordered ultra-large container ships can simultaneously transport 15,880 containers and come equipped with LNG dual-fuel engines as standard. Notably, to comply with increasingly stringent international environmental regulations, they are being designed with "Ammonia DF Ready" specifications, allowing for conversion to ammonia dual-fuel propulsion in the future.
Through this contract, Hanwha Ocean has demonstrated its technological capabilities in preparing for future transitions to eco-friendly fuels. In addition, the world’s first Type-B LNG fuel tank with a design pressure of 1.0 bar will be applied to these vessels.
Compared to the conventional 0.7 bar, the higher pressure allows for safer storage of LNG boil-off gas, enhancing both operational efficiency and environmental performance. This technology also offers practical benefits to shipowners by reducing unnecessary gas flaring and penalty costs during port stays.
Yang Ming Marine Transport, with a total capacity of 727,000 TEU, ranks among the world’s top 10 shipping companies, and this contract marks its first collaboration with Hanwha Ocean. In March, Hanwha Ocean also signed a contract with another Taiwanese shipping company, Evergreen, to build ultra-large container ships. According to shipping research firm Alphaliner, Taiwan is the only country with two companies among the world’s top 10 shipping lines.
Combined, Yang Ming Marine Transport and Evergreen hold the world’s fifth-largest market share. By establishing partnerships with both companies, Hanwha Ocean has solidified its technological presence in the Taiwanese market.
