"Make a PPT" to "Recommend a Restaurant"... ChatGPT Becomes Part of Everyday Life
OpenAI Research Team Releases ChatGPT User Survey Results
Average Daily Messages Reach 2.627 Billion in June
Rapid Growth Among Female Users and Middle-Income Countries
The daily message generation volume of OpenAI's generative AI tool ChatGPT surged sixfold compared to the previous year. There has been an increase in everyday use beyond work purposes, and the gap between different user groups has narrowed. On September 17, Yonhap News reported, "The OpenAI research team, together with Harvard University and others, released the results of a study on how users utilize ChatGPT on September 15 (local time)."
The research team analyzed approximately 1.5 million anonymized conversations from May 2024 to June 2025, tracking consumer AI usage patterns three years after ChatGPT's launch. The study found that the number of messages generated by ChatGPT per day increased significantly over the past year. As of June last year, ChatGPT received an average of 451 million messages per day, but by June this year, that figure had risen to 2.627 billion, marking a sixfold increase. During the same period, the proportion of users employing ChatGPT for work purposes dropped from 47% to 27%, while the share of those using it for non-work purposes rose from 53% to 73%. OpenAI explained, "This demonstrates that ChatGPT serves as both a productivity tool and a driving force for creating value in everyday life."
Average Daily Messages Surge Sixfold in a Year... 73% for Non-Work Purposes
ChatGPT is mainly used to solve everyday tasks, with about three-quarters of conversations focused on practical guidance, information searching, and writing. Activities such as coding accounted for a relatively small portion. Of all messages, 49% were questions, while 40% were requests for specific tasks such as drafting text. Messages expressing the user's own status or information to the AI accounted for 11%.
The gap between different user groups has also decreased rapidly. Based on users' names, the gender ratio was classified, revealing that at the end of 2022, male users accounted for an overwhelming 80%, but recently, the proportion of female users has risen to 52%.
Furthermore, from May 2024 to May 2025, the highest growth rate in usage was observed in middle-income countries with a per capita GDP between $10,000 and $40,000. While the total number of users and penetration rate remain highest in high-income countries, the growth rate of usage in the lowest-income countries was four times higher than in the highest-income countries. By age, those aged 18 to 25 accounted for about 46% of all messages, and the proportion of work-related usage was higher among those in their 30s to 60s.
Fivefold Increase in Users in Korea... Led by Those in Their 20s, 30s, and 40s
OpenAI stated, "Considering that ChatGPT has 700 million weekly users, this is the most comprehensive study to date on actual consumer AI usage," adding, "While ChatGPT can generate outcomes on behalf of users, its primary role is to assist human decision-making."
In Korea as well, the popularization of ChatGPT is progressing rapidly. According to WiseApp Retail, an app and payment data analytics platform, ChatGPT's monthly active users (MAU) reached a record high of 20.31 million last month. This represents a fivefold increase compared to the same month last year (4.07 million), accounting for about 40% of Korean smartphone users (50.12 million).
