Gangneung Crab Trap Community Selected as Outstanding Autonomous Fisheries Community by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries
Recognized for Achievements in Fisheries Resource Management
and Profit Increase, Selected as Outstanding Community
Gangneung City in Gangwon Province announced on September 5 that the 'Gangneung Crab Trap Autonomous Fisheries Community' has been selected as an Outstanding Autonomous Fisheries Community for 2025 by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Since 2006, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has annually selected autonomous fisheries communities with outstanding performance records, providing them with awards and additional funding. This year, among 388 exemplary communities nationwide, four-including the Gangneung Crab Trap Community from Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungnam, and Jeju-were chosen as outstanding communities following on-site inspections, presentations, and reviews.
The Gangneung Crab Trap Community, which was selected as an outstanding (encouragement) community in this year’s evaluation, received high marks for its efforts to protect fishery resources by voluntarily strengthening restrictions on the catch and closed season for its main species, the snow crab.
Additionally, the community was recognized for its ongoing activities such as consistently collecting discarded fishing gear and nets within the harbor to improve the fishing grounds environment, as well as increasing profits through joint sales and establishing online sales networks.
With this selection, the Gangneung Crab Trap Community will receive a commendation from the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries and 40 million won in government prize funds.
