At the policy meeting, the Minister of the Interior and Safety, heads of population-declining local governments, the acting president of Korea Railroad Corporation, and representatives from SOCAR Inc. attended to share major government policies such as the expansion of the Local Extinction Response Fund, and discussed practical measures to attract population inflow and revitalize regions facing population decline.
In particular, Yeoncheon County, through the Council of Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads of Population-Declining Areas, conveyed eight proposals to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, including expanding autonomy such as supporting ordinary expenses through the Local Extinction Response Fund and the re-designation of population-declining areas.
Governor Kim Deokhyun stated, "I ask the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to maintain policy connectivity so that the four metropolitan cities and counties of Yeoncheon, Gapyeong, Ganghwa, and Ongjin-population-declining and border regions that are making special sacrifices-are not excluded from the government's comprehensive local extinction response policies. I look forward to a hopeful future for population-declining areas, created together by the central government, local governments, and the private sector, and ask that guidelines be established as soon as possible so that Yeoncheon County can apply for the Opportunity Development Zone within this year."
