Representative Food Committee Held: Local Specialties and Symbolism Enhanced
Chicken Course Meal, Daeheungsa Barley Ssambap, Samchi Samhap, and More Finalized
Haenam 8mi, the representative delicacies of Haenam County in South Jeolla Province, have been newly selected to better reflect local specialties and symbolism.
On August 5, the county announced that it held a Representative Food Committee meeting and reselected the Haenam 8mi as follows: Haenam-style chicken course meal, Daeheungsa barley ssambap, Haenam gimssam Spanish mackerel sashimi, Haenam hwangchil cuisine, Ttangkkeut Hanwoo dishes, Haenam table, summer pike conger, and sweet potato desserts.

View original imageThe county explained that, based on survey results and on-site feedback, it excluded dishes that are offered by few establishments or lack distinction from those in other regions. Instead, the selection focused on ingredients that highlight Haenam’s image and unique characteristics. The specific menu items are left to the discretion of each restaurant, allowing for a wider variety.
The Haenam-style chicken course meal features a variety of chicken dishes served together, including chicken sashimi, bulgogi, baeksuk (boiled chicken), grilled chicken, and chicken porridge. Daeheungsa barley ssambap is a healthy meal made with barley rice, wild greens, and vegetable wraps, served near Duryunsan Mountain and Daeheungsa Temple. Haenam gimssam Spanish mackerel sashimi is a winter delicacy, with the signature “samchi samhap” where Spanish mackerel sashimi is wrapped in seaweed with rice and aged kimchi. In Haenam, the main production area for hwangchil, various hwangchil dishes such as hwangchil duck baeksuk have developed.
Ttangkkeut Hanwoo dishes feature local Hanwoo beef, prepared as grilled beef or shabu-shabu. Summer pike conger is enjoyed as sashimi or shabu-shabu, with the latter being a popular health food in summer, where the fish is briefly blanched in a broth made from its bones. Haenam table refers to a full-course meal made with agricultural and seafood specialties from Haenam. For dessert, menus featuring sweet potatoes, such as sweet potato bread and beverages, are included.

A county official stated, "Haenam 8mi represents the signature flavors of the region and serves as a major course for gourmet tourism," adding, "We will continue to discover representative restaurants and eateries that showcase local characteristics to further promote gourmet tourism."
