Kim Tae-heum Visits Flood Sites, Prioritizes Restoration of Residents' Daily Lives
Emergency Inspections in Buyeo, Hongseong, and Seosan
"Raising Design Standards, Promoting Permanent Restoration"
Various areas in Chungnam suffered severe damage from extreme heavy rainfall last month. Governor Kim Tae-heum personally visited the flood-affected sites to inspect emergency restoration efforts and to initiate plans for permanent recovery measures.
On August 4, Governor Kim visited major sites impacted by flooding, including the Nabok drainage station in Buyeo, Waryongcheon in Hongseong, and Wonpyeong small stream in Seosan.
Park Junghyun, the head of Buyeo County, Lee Yongrok, the head of Hongseong County, and Lee Wanseop, the mayor of Seosan, accompanied him on these visits.
In particular, the Nabok drainage station in Buyeo suffered large-scale damage due to torrential rain of 50.3mm per hour and a cumulative 321mm, which rendered the station inoperative and resulted in flooding of 60 hectares out of a total 117 hectares.
Both Waryongcheon and Wonpyeong small stream also experienced damage, including embankment collapses and flooding of farmland.
Governor Kim stated, "As extreme heavy rainfall is repeatedly occurring due to climate change, we will significantly raise the design standards compared to previous levels," and added, "We will focus on field-oriented permanent restoration so that residents can return to their daily lives as soon as possible."
He also emphasized, "We will thoroughly ensure the safety of restoration personnel and respond to the heat wave."
Previously, on August 1, Governor Kim requested the government to designate eight cities and counties in Chungnam as additional special disaster zones, to raise the design standards for drainage facilities to a 200-year frequency, and to improve the reality of government recovery support during a meeting at the Presidential Office.
