Osan City Forms Safety Advisory Group for Joint Inspections of Retaining Walls and Bridges
Separate from MOLIT Investigation Committee's Probe into Retaining Wall Collapse
Mayor Lee: "We Will Do Our Best to Prevent Similar Accidents"
On August 4, Osan City in Gyeonggi Province announced that, as a follow-up measure to the collapse of the retaining wall on the Seobu Bypass Road in Gajang-dong, it will carry out joint inspections of major facilities within the city together with a safety management advisory group composed of private sector experts.

View original imageThe city explained that this inspection will be conducted separately from the investigation by the Central Facility Accident Investigation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Lee Gwonjae, Mayor of Osan, stated, "We will thoroughly investigate the accident site as well as similar facilities to prevent similar accidents in advance."
The safety management advisory group consists of university professors, professional engineers, and experts from safety management institutions in the fields of civil engineering, architecture, and structural engineering. The advisory group will investigate not only the reinforced earth retaining wall structure in Gajang-dong on the Seobu Bypass Road, but also bridges and tunnels within the city as stipulated by the Special Act on the Maintenance and Management of Facilities. If necessary, the group also plans to inspect roads and retaining walls not covered by the relevant legislation.
The city will also conduct an emergency detailed safety inspection of the entire Seobu Bypass Road, with participation from geotechnical engineering experts. The safety inspection will include: ▲ an assessment of the condition of the facilities ▲ a structural safety evaluation of the facilities ▲ the establishment of a prompt restoration plan through investigation of repair and reinforcement methods.
