Pohang City Achieves 'Excellent' Rating in Disaster Management Assessment for Second Consecutive Year, Proving Its Status as a Safe City
Selection as an Excellent Local Government in the Disaster Management Assessment by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for Two Consecutive Years
Evaluation of Realistic Drills, Strengthened Cooperation with Related Agencies, and Field-Oriented Countermeasures
Pohang City has achieved an 'Excellent' rating for the second consecutive year in the 2025 Disaster Management Assessment conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
This assessment is a system that comprehensively evaluates the disaster management capabilities of 243 local governments nationwide, covering all areas such as disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.
According to the results of the Ministry's assessment, Pohang City received a total score of 90.25 points, which is higher than the national average of 78.1 points, placing it among the top-ranked local governments in the country.
By category, the city scored 69.1 points in prevention, 81.4 points in preparedness, 91.4 points in response, and 98.3 points in recovery, achieving high marks in all areas.
This result reflects the effectiveness of citizen safety measures that have been intensively promoted, such as field-oriented resident evacuation and preemptive control of high-risk areas, which are similar to real-life scenarios. It is also attributed to comprehensive efforts to prevent casualties, including pre-disaster prevention measures, the establishment of resident safety plans, realistic evacuation and disaster response training, and the creation of a rapid recovery system.
In April, the city conducted the Safe Korea Drill, simulating an extreme storm and flood disaster to strengthen on-site response capabilities and cooperation with related agencies. In preparation for heavy rainfall during the summer, the city regularly conducts urban flood response drills, reviews step-by-step response procedures for different disaster situations, and continuously monitors drainage pump stations and disaster-prone areas to implement resident protection measures.
Building on this selection as an excellent institution, the city plans to re-examine its disaster countermeasures, promote safety policies that citizens can directly experience, strengthen disaster monitoring systems using advanced technology, and continuously identify and improve vulnerabilities that threaten citizen safety.
