Vice Minister of Unification Delivers Remarks:
"We Will Strive to Help You Become Members of the Local Community"
On July 14, President Lee Jaemyung marked the 2nd North Korean Defectors’ Day by stating, “North Korean defectors have experienced the pain of division more directly and vividly than anyone else,” and added, “The government will carefully look after the pain and difficulties of those who have come to our society in pursuit of a new life.”
President Lee conveyed these remarks in a congratulatory address for the 2nd North Korean Defectors’ Day ceremony, which was delivered by the Vice Minister of Unification on his behalf. He said, “We always support your new lives and dreams.”
President Lee stated, “We will pay close attention to every step each of you takes as you adapt to your local communities and put down roots in your new homes,” and added, “Every member of our society has the right to receive support tailored to their individual needs and to live together as part of the local community.”

He continued, “The government will strive not only to provide basic settlement support and protection, but also to help North Korean defectors integrate, grow, and develop as members of the local community. If the day comes when you are able to overcome your pain and lead stable lives, there will be nothing more to wish for.”
