CJ CheilJedang's "Bibigo Tteokbokki" Now Available at Major U.S. Retailer Kroger
Expanding Distribution to Local Grocery Channels
Exported to 49 Countries Including the United States, Japan, and Australia
On June 11, CJ CheilJedang announced that it has begun selling "Bibigo Frozen Tteokbokki" at Kroger, a major retail channel in the United States. Following its introduction of "shelf-stable Tteokbokki" at Costco in the U.S. at the end of last year, the company now plans to actively target the market by expanding its distribution to local grocery channels.
This marks the first time CJ CheilJedang has exported frozen Tteokbokki to the mainstream North American market. Compared to shelf-stable Tteokbokki, the frozen variety offers a chewier texture. In particular, unlike other Tteokbokki products previously sold in the U.S., Bibigo Frozen Tteokbokki is convenient because it does not require rinsing the rice cakes or adjusting the amount of water?consumers simply cook the contents in a frying pan. In addition, the product uses a sauce that replicates the flavor of homemade Korean Tteokbokki, which is expected to be well received by local consumers who enjoy K-food.
While Tteokbokki products sold overseas have traditionally focused on milder flavors or local adaptation, there is now a growing preference for authentic Tteokbokki. The popularity of Tteokbokki continues to rise in the global market, and international consumers are becoming more familiar with the spicy and sweet taste and texture of Korean-style Tteokbokki. In fact, from 2020 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of Korean rice cake exports to the U.S. reached 23%. CJ CheilJedang's Tteokbokki export sales to the U.S. in 2024 increased approximately fourfold compared to 2023.
CJ CheilJedang currently exports Bibigo Tteokbokki to 49 countries, including the United States, Japan, and Australia. In particular, the product has gained popularity by entering mainstream retail channels such as Costco in France and Japan. CJ CheilJedang plans to further accelerate its growth by expanding global sales channels based on a differentiated Tteokbokki portfolio.
