For the first month of the program in June, the city selected a line from poet Kim Bokgeun's sijo poem "Seed" as the 'Korean Language Empathy Quote': "Words have seeds, and hearts have seeds. In the grain that has become hard from heat, there is a seed."
The word "grain" refers to an individual kernel of grain. Just as there are proper and improper words, there are also sincere and insincere hearts. Words that are carefully considered, like well-ripened grains, can move another person's heart. This quote expresses the importance of words with substance and a balanced heart.
Throughout June, the city will introduce this quote to citizens via the city hall building, the electronic display board in Yangdeok-dong, and the municipal information display systems (DID) installed at 69 locations.
Going forward, the city plans to select Korean Language Empathy Quotes that reflect the social atmosphere of the time, delivering messages of comfort and hope to citizens.
Lee Dongho, the city's Korean Language Officer (Public Relations Officer), said, "Sometimes, we are deeply moved by a short phrase we happen to see on the street," and added, "I hope that easy-to-understand quotes in Korean from the works of local writers will become messages of empathy for citizens going through difficult daily lives."
