Gwangju Police Strengthen Leading Activities for School Violence and Juvenile Crime Response Analysis
All-Out Efforts for School Violence Prevention and Youth Protection
Centered on School Police Officers (SPOs)
Gwangju police are launching youth protection activities for the new school semester. Centered around School Police Officers (SPOs), they will strengthen on-site responses to school violence and juvenile crime, and implement customized prevention activities tailored to changing crime patterns.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency on the 31st, an analysis of last year's local school violence and juvenile crime statistics showed that the number of arrests for school violence increased by 18.2% to 708 compared to the previous year, while juvenile crime decreased by 13.3%.
School violence was mainly concentrated among out-of-school youth (252 individuals) and middle school students (232 individuals). By type, sexual violence accounted for 52.6% among elementary students, while assault and battery made up about half of the cases among middle and high school students and out-of-school youth.
Although overall juvenile crime decreased, cases related to sexual violence and gambling increased. In response, Gwangju police will strengthen school violence prevention education tailored to each grade level, and, in cooperation with the Office of Education and specialized agencies, conduct surveys and implement customized guidance programs to address youth gambling issues.
Outreach activities for out-of-school youth will also be carried out in parallel. The police plan to further expand cooperation systems, such as regular working-level meetings with related organizations like the Autonomous Police Committee and the Office of Education, and joint workshops to facilitate communication between SPOs and field personnel.
Commissioner Park Sungjoo stated, "Ensuring the safe growth of youth requires not only the police but also the continuous interest of the local community," and appealed for the active participation and cooperation of citizens.
