The May Mothers’ House and the May 18 People’s Uprising Mobile Strike Force Comrades Association held a press conference on the 20th at the May 18 Democracy Square in Dong-gu, Gwangju, declaring, "The entire nation was shocked by the imposition of martial law for the first time in 44 years. Gwangju, where the military committed massacres 45 years ago, shuddered at the terrifying memories," and added, "Democracy has been thrown away, the economy has collapsed, and the nation’s dignity has plummeted, leaving the people to endure over 100 days of humiliation."
They continued, "When Chun Doo-hwan and other ringleaders of the rebellion were not held accountable for the massacres and were allowed to die naturally, the specter of military dictatorship tainted the prosecutorial dictatorship forces. The People Power Party has already become a party defending the ringleaders of the rebellion, manipulated by far-right YouTubers, shamans, and pseudo-religions like Shincheonji, becoming a burden to the people," they argued.
They further stated, "We witnessed attempts to provoke North Korea into war, using it as a pretext to maintain martial law and pursue permanent rule. We also saw precious sons, entrusted with protecting the lives and safety of the people, deceived and reduced to mere tools of rebellion," adding, "Even now, the rebellion continues."
Additionally, they said, "If this rebellion is overcome wisely and peacefully, the world will once again look upon Korea with awe, opening opportunities for economic recovery and peace," and urged, "The dismissal and punishment of President Yoon, the ringleader of the rebellion, is the beginning of restoring democracy. Dismiss him immediately."
