Fire at National Hangul Museum "Welding Sparks Spread to Urethane Foam"
The fire at the National Hangeul Museum in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, is believed to have been caused by sparks from welding work igniting flammable urethane foam.
On the 4th, according to the police and others, a joint inspection team consisting of the police, fire authorities, Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, and Korea Safety Corporation conducted an inspection of the fire site from around 10 a.m. for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
A police official stated, "While performing ceiling welding work on the 3rd floor, sparks occurred, and it appears that these sparks ignited the urethane foam on the 4th floor floor, causing the fire."
The police are reviewing whether to apply charges of arson by negligence to the construction personnel and plan to summon them for investigation.
The fire broke out on the 1st at the Hangeul Museum, which is undergoing an extension construction, completely burning the 3rd and 4th floors. During the fire suppression process, one firefighter who entered the building was injured by falling rebar and was transported to a hospital.
