Prosecution Seeks 10 Million Won Fine for Businessman Who Paid for Lee Sangik's Suit
The prosecution has requested a fine of 10 million won for a construction contractor accused of paying for the suit expenses of Lee Sangik, the governor of Hampyeong County in Jeonnam.
On the 23rd, during the final trial held at the Mokpo Branch of the Gwangju District Court, Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Kim Yeonju), the prosecution asked the court to impose a fine of 10 million won on contractor A, who was indicted on charges including bribery.
Contractor A was brought to trial on charges of paying for five custom-made suits worth about 8.88 million won for Governor Lee, who was elected in the April 2020 Hampyeong County by-election, allegedly in exchange for securing a private contract for a sewer pipeline maintenance project.
A's attorney argued in court, "Although a suit ticket worth about 1.2 million won was delivered through B, there was no solicitation."
Previously, the prosecution had sought a sentence of one year and six months in prison, a fine of 20 million won, and the forfeiture of 8.88 million won for Governor Lee on charges of bribery, and a fine of 10 million won for B, who acted as a broker.
The sentencing hearing for Governor Lee, A, and B is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on the 13th of next month at the Mokpo Branch.
