The election for association presidents in the domestic sports world is in full swing. Fierce competition is taking place to become the head of the association despite not receiving a salary or any special benefits. So, what is the situation in American professional sports? The U.S. operates strictly based on performance. The salary levels also exceed imagination. Recently, Golfweek, a U.S. golf specialty media outlet, disclosed the incomes of professional sports commissioners.
The most curious point is the income of Jay Monahan, the commissioner leading the U.S. Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour. According to Golfweek, Commissioner Monahan earned a total of $23 million (approximately 33.4 billion KRW) in 2023. This ranks as the second highest income among U.S. professional sports leaders. Compared to his 2022 income of $18.4 million (approximately 26.8 billion KRW), it increased by a whopping $4.6 million. The breakdown of Monahan's income is as follows: base salary of $1,887,096, bonuses and incentives totaling $12.1 million, retirement benefits of $2.5 million, and long-term incentives of $6.7 million, reflecting a massive amount earned based on performance.
Commissioner Monahan has been striving to improve the quality of the PGA Tour in response to LIV Golf. This year, a total of 39 tournaments will be held, including the four major championships and smaller-scale events. The average winner's prize per tournament increased to $2,299,413 (approximately 330 million KRW). Additionally, eight signature events, first introduced last year, continue. These are elite tournaments concentrating prize money on a few, with a total purse of $20 million and a winner's prize of $3.6 million. Furthermore, the PIP system distributes a $100 million bonus to star players, and a final event bonus of $75 million is shared among the top 30 players.
The U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, which is growing in size, is still difficult to compare with the PGA Tour. Molly McGluar Summan, LPGA Tour commissioner, earned a salary of $985,494 (approximately 1.4 billion KRW) in 2022. The LPGA Tour is hosting 35 tournaments this year, the same number as last year. The total prize money is $131 million (approximately 190.6 billion KRW), an increase of about 90% compared to 2021. Commissioner Summan became the head of the LPGA Tour in May 2021 but left the tour on the 9th of this month. His tenure was the third shortest in history.
