Ulju-gun, Drone Plays Key Role in Safety Management for Ganjeolgot Sunrise Viewing
Ulsan Ulju-gun announced on the 2nd that drones equipped with AI systems played a significant role in the safety management process for the New Year's sunrise event at Ganjeolgot.
Ganjeolgot in Ulju-gun, where the sun rises first on the Korean Peninsula every New Year, attracts tens of thousands of sunrise watchers annually and is recognized as a nationwide popular sunrise spot. This year, the event was completely canceled to mourn the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster, and only safety and traffic management services were provided.
In particular, this year Ulju-gun utilized drones for crowd control, shuttle bus monitoring, and traffic management near Ganjeolgot, achieving great results.
After establishing a drone control center at the comprehensive situation room (Daesong Village Hall), continuous 24-hour monitoring was conducted using a Helikite (tethered aerial device), and drones performed patrol surveillance.
For the first time, an AI system was applied that counted the number of sunrise watchers in real time through drone footage and broadcasted announcements from the drone when large crowds gathered within certain areas.
Additionally, during shuttle bus operations, to alleviate crowding during return trips, drones monitored the Ganjeolgot shuttle buses and took the lead in resolving on-site issues.
As a result of operating the drone control center, no safety accidents occurred at Ganjeolgot during the New Year's sunrise period, and the return procession was completed early.
Ulju-gun plans to improve the AI system and increase the number of drones to implement more systematic safety management at next year’s Ganjeolgot New Year's sunrise event.
