Daegu Urban Railroad Ansim?Hayang Extension Section 8.89km Opens... 3 New Stations Established
Completed in 5 years with 372.8 billion won
Extension of Hayang~Geumho section also underway
The opening ceremony for the extension of Daegu Metro Line 1 to Hayang (Ansim~Hayang) was held on the 20th at Hayang Station in Gyeongsan City, attended by about 500 people including Kang Hee-eop, Chairman of the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee, Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, members of the National Assembly, nearby university presidents, and local residents.
This section, with a project cost of 372.8 billion KRW (259.7 billion KRW national funds, 113.1 billion KRW local funds), extends 8.89 km from Ansim Station in Dong-gu, Daegu, which was the eastern terminus of the existing Daegu Metro Line 1, to the newly established Hayang Station in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan City. After construction began in April 2019, the opening ceremony was held five years later, and operations will start on the 21st. Of the 8.89 km extension, 1.9 km is in Daegu and 6.99 km is in Gyeongbuk (Gyeongsan).
The new stations are (Daegu 1) Daegu Hanui University Hospital, (Gyeongsan 2) Buho (Kyungil University? Hosan University), and Hayang (Daegu Catholic University), totaling three stations.
Gyeongsan City in Gyeongbuk shares the same living area as Daegu, and commuting for university students and workers in the Gyeongsan Industrial Complex was only possible by road, making the introduction of metro rail a long-standing wish of residents in Daegu and Gyeongsan.
The metro project had been delayed due to the large budget required, but with efforts from Gyeongbuk Province and Daegu City, it was designated as a metropolitan railway (extension of the metro), securing additional national funds and opening the era of full-scale metro rail.
With this project, Daegu Hanui University Hospital Station will be established in the Daegu section, and Buho Station and Hayang Station in the Gyeongsan section of Gyeongbuk. From around 5 a.m. to midnight the next day, trains will run 150 times on weekdays, with 10-minute intervals during rush hours and 16-minute intervals during off-peak times.
This opening is expected to bring significant changes to local residents' lives by improving travel convenience and shifting transportation modes that were previously concentrated on roads.
Following the extension of Daegu Metro Line 1 to Hayang, Gyeongbuk Province is working to expand the future low-carbon eco-friendly public transportation network by conducting feasibility studies and establishing basic plans for extending the metro to Geumho-eup in Yeongcheon City to meet transportation demand and improve metropolitan accessibility for LetsRun Park (Yeongcheon Racecourse) and industrial complexes being developed in Yeongcheon City.
