K7 Among Teens, 3 Out of 10 Recalled for 'Fire Risk'... 310,000 Units Across 22 Models This Month
137,000 Units Recalled Due to Fire Risk Only in K7
Three out of ten Kia K7 models are being recalled. These vehicles were manufactured between November 2009 and December 2015. Due to the possibility of fire, they are being recalled for repair.
On the 17th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that manufacturing defects were found in 307,517 vehicles across 22 models produced or imported and sold by Kia, Hyundai Motor Company, and GM Korea, and voluntary corrective actions will be taken this month.
At Kia, 137,553 K7 vehicles equipped with the electronic hydraulic control unit (HECU) have weak durability, posing a fire risk, and have been recalled since the day before. The K7 was sold 509,998 units from November 2009 to 2020, of which 27.5% are subject to recall and repair. Kia launched the K7 in November 2009 and discontinued sales in April 2021.
Additionally, 100,023 units of Kia Sorento and Sorento Hybrid models will undergo corrective action starting the next day due to malfunctioning daytime running lights. Defects affecting vehicle operation are elements that do not meet safety standards.
Meanwhile, Hyundai will recall 36,122 units of four models, including the Nexo and Elec City hydrogen electric buses, starting from the 20th. These vehicles are equipped with a temperature-sensitive pressure relief valve that should release hydrogen from the hydrogen tank in case of fire, but a defect in this valve poses a fire risk. Additionally, 2,517 Ioniq 5 vehicles will undergo corrective action starting from the 24th due to malfunctioning daytime running lights.
GM Korea will recall 31,057 units of nine models including the Trax Crossover and four models including the GM Asia Pacific Escalade starting from the 23rd due to insufficient durability of the fuel pump control module, which may cause the engine to stall. Honda will recall 245 units of the PILOT model starting from the 20th due to poor fastening of the fuel tank pipe and fuel filler neck, which may cause fuel leakage.
