Election Commission: "Baek Seon-hee of Joguk Innovation Party to Succeed Joguk as Proportional Representative"
Professor Baek Seon-hee of Seoul Theological University succeeded the parliamentary seat of former leader Cho Kuk of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, who lost his position as a member of the National Assembly.
The National Election Commission announced on the 13th, "The Speaker of the National Assembly notified us on the 12th of the vacancy caused by the loss of Cho Kuk's membership. Accordingly, Baek Seon-hee, ranked 13th on the proportional representation candidate list, was decided as the successor."
Previously, former leader Cho was sentenced to two years in prison by the Supreme Court for his involvement in his children's admission fraud and the cover-up of the Blue House inspection, resulting in the loss of his parliamentary seat.
With Professor Baek succeeding the proportional representation seat, the impeachment vote against President Yoon Seok-yeol the following day was no longer affected. Initially, if the succession procedure had not been completed by 5 p.m. on the 14th before the National Assembly plenary session, the number of dissenting votes within the ruling party required for the impeachment vote would have increased by one to nine.
