Yeo: "Consensus Formed on Yoon's Resignation as a Faster and Clearer Option than Impeachment"
I Yang-su: "Lee Jae-myung Has No Judicial Risk"
On the 10th, the People Power Party discussed President Yoon Seok-yeol's orderly resignation but failed to finalize an exact schedule, only reaching a consensus that the timing should be faster and clearer than impeachment.
Lee Yang-su, chairman of the People Power Party's Political Stabilization Task Force (TF), responded this way when reporters asked about the "timing of President Yoon's resignation" immediately after a closed emergency party meeting held at the National Assembly that afternoon.
Lee said, "Various opinions were given by the members at the party meeting, and the leadership may have used them as a reference to establish future response plans and strategies." He added, "I think the leadership will consult with the presidential office based on this."
Regarding the possibility that the presidential office might reject the party's demands and choose to proceed with the National Assembly's impeachment motion to the Constitutional Court rather than an early resignation, he only said, "We will actively negotiate."
At the party meeting that day, discussions were held on two plans prepared by the TF: "resignation in February followed by a presidential election in April" and "resignation in March followed by a presidential election in May." Concerning the opinion raised within the party advocating for an "immediate resignation," he explained, "Immediate resignation means a presidential election 60 days later, and neither party has enough time to select a presidential candidate."
When asked if there were opinions favoring impeachment over resignation, Lee said, "There was no opinion at the party meeting that impeachment is better than resignation," emphasizing, "We reached a consensus on an orderly resignation, which essentially means resignation. Currently, the orderly resignation has not changed to impeachment."
Regarding criticism that President Yoon's resignation is being delayed considering the trial situation of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, Lee refuted, saying, "Judicial proceedings are expected to conclude around June, so the presidential election date, based on the ruling party's internal discussions of resignation in February or March, is scheduled for April or May," and that it is unrelated to Lee's judicial risks.
