Jongno-gu Opens Deaf Shelter on the 10th
Jongno-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Munheon) will open the "Nongain Shelter" (Jongno 50ragil 41-3) on the 10th to provide convenience for the hearing and speech impaired.
The Nongain Shelter is a building with one basement floor and three above-ground floors, covering a total area of 336.27㎡, consisting of a multipurpose education room, counseling room, and meeting room. The existing Sign Language Interpretation Center, which was located in the Disabled Integrated Hall, has been relocated to this building to create a space for comfortable communication and interaction for people with disabilities. The operation of the shelter will be managed by the Jongno-gu Sign Language Interpretation Center.

View original imageAt the shelter, various programs supporting the health promotion and emotional support of people with disabilities, as well as counseling covering all aspects of daily life, will be provided. Not only general counseling but also sign language counseling is available. Additionally, it contributes to improving quality of life by delivering useful information.
Jongno-gu expects that by using this place as a hub, it will provide more opportunities for communication and form emotional empathy among approximately 950 hearing and speech impaired residents living in the district.
Meanwhile, to establish the center, the district utilized vacant public property, reducing building rental costs. All expenses for construction, equipment purchase, and labor costs were fully covered by district funds.

Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, "The Nongain Shelter aims to be a meeting place and resting space where disabled residents can stay comfortably and interact," adding, "We will support improving the quality of life for the hearing and speech impaired through high-quality education, counseling, and information provision, enabling them to live without inconvenience as members of our society."
