Busan National University (President Choi Jae-won) Film Research Institute (Director Seo Dae-jung, Department of Arts and Culture Video Studies) will hold the ‘Busan National University Film Research Institute Regular Colloquium CINE-NETWORK ON’ on the 6th at 3:30 PM in Seonghak Hall on campus.
Since 2021, the Busan National University Film Research Institute has been steadily conducting the regular colloquium CINE-NETWORK ON to establish a foundational understanding of research on East Asia networks in the post-Cold War hyperconnected era.
This colloquium will invite critic Shin Hyeong-cheol to give a lecture titled ‘Survivalism, Meritocracy, Vigilantism: Some Trends in Contemporary K-Narratives.’ Through this, it aims to share academic achievements with the local community and contribute to enhancing the cultural literacy of local residents.
During the colloquium, an in-depth discussion will be held with critic Shin Hyeong-cheol on the ethical capacity of art, the critical capacity of ethics, and the artistic capacity of criticism.
Critic Shin Hyeong-cheol has formed a broad readership by delivering profound reflections on our society and art through numerous publications such as The Ethics of Decline, The Community of Feeling, The Experiment of Precise Love, The Sorrow That Studies Sorrow, and The History of Life.
In particular, his criticism is noted for not merely analyzing artworks but connecting them with their historical contexts, encompassing ethical and philosophical dimensions. In this colloquium, critic Shin Hyeong-cheol is expected to explore the ethical role of art and the social significance of criticism through the contemporary themes of ‘Survivalism, Meritocracy, Vigilantism,’ creating a space of empathy with attendees.

This lecture is open to all members of Busan National University as well as local residents. Admission is free, and Busan National University students and staff can register as part of extracurricular programs, while local residents can pre-register via a Google form.
