Pukyong National University Students Receive Top and Excellence Awards at the 'Young Scientist Presentation Contest'
Organized by the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Energy
Master's student Baliantho Rozulun Apip and third-year student Seo Yeji from the Department of Ocean Engineering at Pukyong National University (President Bae Sang-hoon) received the Grand Prize and Excellence Award, respectively, at the 'Young Scientist Presentation Contest' hosted by the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Energy.

The 'Young Scientist Presentation Contest' is held annually to provide more opportunities for students in the marine environment and energy fields to present their papers and to nurture outstanding talents.
Master's student Baliantho Rozulun Apip received the Grand Prize for his paper titled "Utilization of Steelmaking Slag for the Remediation of Low-Permeability Coastal Polluted Sediments."
In this paper, he proposed covering low-permeability sediments with steel slag to release calcium, increasing permeability by up to 81.5%, and preventing eutrophication through the induction of calcium phosphate precipitation. This approach was highly evaluated for its potential to reduce harmful environmental impacts and contribute to water quality improvement.
Student Seo Yeji received the Excellence Award for her paper titled "Effects of Microplastics on the Physical Properties of Coastal Sediments."
Her research analyzed the impact of microplastics on the physicochemical properties of coastal sediments, recognizing that microplastics weaken sediment structure and reduce viscosity, thereby promoting erosion and resuspension, which increases the risk of eutrophication.
