New York Korean Cultural Center to Host Children's Kimchi Making Workshop for Kimjang Season
The Korean Cultural Center New York (Director Kim Cheon-su) announced on the 16th that it will hold a 'Our Child's First Kimchi Experience Class' for children on the 2nd of next month (local time).
This event provides children with an opportunity to experience the kimchi-making culture by making kimchi, Korea's representative dish, themselves in time for the kimjang season.
Before the kimjang practice, writer Choi Yang-sook will tell kimchi stories tailored to children's perspectives. Through the story of Giho and his grandmother in Choi's new work, Slippery, Spicy, Tingly: A Kimchi Mystery, children will be able to feel more familiar with kimchi.
Next, content creator James Park will demonstrate the traditional Korean kimjang culture and the process of making kimchi. Children will experience making kimchi by mixing the prepared kimchi seasoning with salted napa cabbage. The finished kimchi will be packed and taken home by the children.
Director Kim Cheon-su said, "Through this experience class, I hope children will experience the value of sharing embedded in the kimjang culture, which is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," adding, "It will be an opportunity to feel pride in Korean food."
